Do we still have magic without dice? Yes, we do. We still have the levels, you still have to purchase new spells (1st Level $100, 2nd Level $200, and so on) and you still have to keep track of your usage of them. You just don't have to keep track of the dice or roll for them. You merely post what the skill is and then use it. I usually just use the same string and tally on paper how many times I use it. It's the easiest way to keep track of it.
Casting magic takes all your concentration. Break it and you break the spell and it hits someone else, maybe even the caster.
All spells start at level one. What does that mean? That means that no matter what level you are, first trying out a new spell will bring about failures. You can't pick up a tool and know how to change the oil in a car perfectly without either reading the instructions or practicing.
How many can you have? As many as you can afford.
Magic users. The power comes from somewhere, right? To think that you can just tap into some unknown power source without consequences is insane. Each time you go over the maximum usage allowed, you lose a bit of your soul and you age. It's not noticeable at first. However, excessive abuse will make your 40-year-old look 90.
500. What is this number? This is the number you do not want to reach. Every time you go over your maximum daily allowances on spells, it costs you 1/500. Using magic can be addictive and the more you abuse it, the more you crave that power. That is how you age. If you use it within the guidelines, you will not grow overly obsessed with magic.
The OOC string. Even though we have done away with dice (except in pregnancies), you still must post your OOC string for credit for a spell or a skill to count. This allows your character to level up. For instance, Tara is going to shoot a Fireball spell.
Level 1 | Fireball | 1/3 uses | 1/15 | 0/500
It's pretty self-explanatory. You only get to use this spell 3 times in a day. It takes 15 uses to level this spell up. If you go above 3 uses, I refer you back to the number 0/500. If you go over, you would add a number to the 0.
When you master this level, since we don't have XP to give you, you get a reward. For this spell, it would be 15 x $100, because this is how much you initially paid for it. Level 2 would be 15 x $200, and so on.
How do you raise your wizard or witch in levels? Easy. You have to have three of your spells raised up to the next level. When you have three the same level, that is what level your wizard or mage is. That is how you determine when you can start purchasing higher levels in magic.
